Since combat is an integral part of this game I think it would be useful to all of us non-playtesters to have a thread on the rules. I think I have most of the combat rules down so I'll take a stab at it (and hopefully will receive confirmation and correction from someone in the know).
1. A player may use a movement die roll to use an army to attack an adjacent unfriendly army. If the army is headed by a leader, a character die may be used to attack.
2. An army is composed of all the units in the space for the defender; the attacker chooses which units to bring into the battle from adjacent spaces.
3. When armies are fighting in regular combat (not the seige of a stronghold) the combat continues for multiple rounds until either the attacker or defender is destroyed or the attacker retreats (back to the space attacker came from).
4. Each combat round: only 5 units may attack or defend but excess units in the combat may be used as casualties. A player rolls one die for each unit and hits on a 5 or 6. Both the defender and attacker roll simultaneously. For each hit scored against a player, that player must remove one regular unit or reduce an elite unit to a regular.
5. If the combat occurs in certain locations (the Fords of Isen) then for the first round of combat only, the attacker only hits on a 6.
6. If combat is against a stronghold (a seige) then combat only lasts for 1 round and the attacker only hits on a 6.
7. An elite unit may be sacrificed after the round of combat at a stronghold to allow another round to be fought.
8. Leaders have a leadership rating that allows that # of rerolls for each round of combat.
9. Any number of combat cards may be played for each round of combat- modifying the above rules.
10. Certain leaders (like Gimli) have the ability to increase the strength of armies- allowing an additional die to be rolled in combat.
11. Any number of units may occupy a space (and thus form an army) but only 5 units may occupy a stronghold. A stronghold may also hold any number of leaders.

1. A player may use a movement die roll to use an army to attack an adjacent unfriendly army. If the army is headed by a leader, a character die may be used to attack. Correct. Moreover, some event cards let a player to attack under special circumstances. 2. An army is composed of all the units in the space for the defender; the attacker chooses which units to bring into the battle from adjacent spaces. Correct, but there is a stacking limit of 10 army units per army in a region (5 in a stronghold). 3. When armies are fighting in regular combat (not the seige of a stronghold) the combat continues for multiple rounds until either the attacker or defender is destroyed or the attacker retreats (back to the space attacker came from). Yes, but if the attacker does not cease the attack, the defender can also choose to retreat with any surviving units. Correct. 5. If the combat occurs in certain locations (the Fords of Isen) then for the first round of combat only, the attacker only hits on a 6. Ok. 6. If combat is against a stronghold (a seige) then combat only lasts for 1 round and the attacker only hits on a 6. Ok. 7. An elite unit may be sacrificed after the round of combat at a stronghold to allow another round to be fought. The elite unit need only to be reduced to regular status. 8. Leaders have a leadership rating that allows that # of rerolls for each round of combat. Yes, to the usual maximum of five rerolls. 9. Any number of combat cards may be played for each round of combat- modifying the above rules. Only one card per round per player. 10. Certain leaders (like Gimli) have the ability to increase the strength of armies- allowing an additional die to be rolled in combat. Correct. 11. Any number of units may occupy a space (and thus form an army) but only 5 units may occupy a stronghold. A stronghold may also hold any number of leaders.[/quote] As said above, open regions have a stacking limit of ten army units. Leaders can be freely stacked in an army wherever it may be. I hope my formatting is not too confusing.

My only question is: what happens when a defender has more than five units in a territory that contains a stronghold? Let's say the Free People's player has seven units in the Minith Tirith territory, and Sauron attacks. Does the FP player fight a regular battle until his army is reduced to five units, and then retreat into the stronghold? Can he sacrifice the extra two units in order to bring the rest of his army into the stronghold? Can he retreat the excess two units to an adjacent space?

Francesco: Thank you for correcting me where wrong and confirming me where right.
The defender can retreat- nice.

The defending player (most often the FP) must decide wheter to fight a field battle or not. If a field battle I fought then the defender can, as in a normal battle, choose to retreat into the Stronghold or to a free adjacent region after each round of battle fought. However the total numer of units retreating into the Stronghold can naturally not be more than five units plus all Leaders. All excess units are removed as casualties. Hi,
I have an associated question with battles, if you win a battle must you move your entire army into the new province, just the armies you commited or an amount of your choosing. The reason I asked is, in the case of breaking a siege would all the defenders have to move out.

The defender can retreat- nice. I forgot: the defender cannot retreat if under siege (naturally enough).

Hi, The reason I asked is, in the case of breaking a siege would all the defenders have to move out. Torque It does not matter, since if you break a siege, your units would move to the region containing the stronghold.

I can already see my brother defeating me (he is the expert for strategies, you know).

Hi
we played this great game for the first time today and are a bit confused about the different ways to start combat regarding the participation of leaders:
If I use a movement die to attack with an army, are leaders with this army allowed to take part in the combat or not ?
If I use a character die, must leaders take part in the combat ? If I have more than one leader, must all leaders take part in the combat ?
Thanks for any clarifications on that. Andreas.

Yes, Leaders and Characters may always follow the Armies in movement and Combat. Leaders cannot be left alone in a Region. If I use a character die, must leaders take part in the combat ? If I have more than one leader, must all leaders take part in the combat ? No, as long as you leave at least one unit as a rear guard you can keep Leaders and Characters out of the combat and in the rear guard. Thanks for any clarifications on that. Andreas. Have you read the Rules FAQ on the web site? You will probaly run into more question as you play the game, you will find the answers to most of them in the FAQ. home.rixtele.com/~charmtroll/wotr/wotr.htm[glow=green,2,300]Veldrin[/glow]

[glow=green,2,300]Veldrin[/glow] I thought that those units in excess are not considered casualties but are put with the reserves, aren't they? It's stated somewhere in the rules book, IIRC.

Yes, the units removed are placed back among the units possible to recruit.

I read the FAQ, the question is there but the answer does not solve the problem. I still don't see the difference between attacking using an army die and attacking using a character die (I know the difference regarding army movement though). The options seem to imply that there must be a difference. Andreas.

2. An army is composed of all the units in the space for the defender; the attacker chooses which units to bring into the battle from adjacent spaces. Correct, but there is a stacking limit of 10 army units per army in a region (5 in a stronghold). _________ If it is correct that "the attacker chooses which units to bring into the battle from adjacent space*s*", with plural on spaces, then if I am the attacker and I have troops in multiple regions surrounding the defender's region, I can use any or all units in ANY adjacent spaces for that single attack? Or should it be "space", singular. Thanks.
