THE BALROG IN PLAY Special Abilities Fire and Shadow: If the Fellowship is revealed or declared, and as a result has moved through, is moving from, or is moving into a region occupied by the Balrog, draw a Hunt tile and apply its effects, ignoring any Reveal icon. If the drawn tile is an Eye, eliminate the Balrog and the Guide of the Fellowship (but discard the Eye tile without effect if Gollum is the Guide).
What if Smeageol is the guide? My first idea was - same as gollum, but - "Note: Sméagol is not Gollum" (TWILIGHT OF THE THIRD AGE • 3) So, do you eliminate Smeagol?

I couldn't find the official answer from the playtest emails but I'm 99% certain that Smeagol and the Balrog are eliminated on an Eye tile.

Yes, you do.
In fact, if you declare through Moria into Lorien with Smeagol guiding, and draw an eye for the Balrog, you eliminate Smeagol before his own ability makes him leave.
