I know that it might be a little too soon to be asking this-given that the game hasn't been released yet , but I was wondering if you think there is a chance that the game designers will release an add on for the original journey from the Shire to Rivendell? If yes, then how do you think they would achieve this-via minor alterations to the existing game, or through an entire new board, rules, cards etc.? I'd be interested to here what people think !

If there will ever be any add-ons, the journey to Rivendell would be a good theme. But I'd rather like to see one larger add-on box than several small ones. The box could also include more detailed rules for Mordor/Rohan/Gondor. The best solution for a combined game with the original game content and add-ons would be small additional boards with more detailed landscape of the aforementioned regions. They should be used together with the large main board. Additional rules, cards and playing pieces could be integrated a lot more easily of course.

There are a lot of possible options for expansions. One cheap option would be to just issue a pack of additional cards that players could add to the original deck. They could even take suggestions from players about what cards they would like to see. Maybe hold a contest.
Another possibility would be to add more specific characters. As I understand it, this game has generic leaders for the various nations, and does not feature specific figures for characters like Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn, Faramir, etc...Considering that the Mouth of Sauron only appears in 4 pages of the last volume, and these other characters appears in several chapters of the last two volumes, they may deserve figures of their own.
Of course, all these characters are Free People's heroes. All the major Shadow leaders are included in the game. So the Shadow player would need some additional bonus if the Free People's player is to get extra leaders. One way to go might be to give the Shadow player seige engines. These would be units that could be added above the five unit limit for seige combat. Because so many combats are seiges, these could be quite useful.
The publishers could also consider selling an extra-large gameboard (several wargame companies are attempting this now) for people who like using miniatures. Some other companies are selling fine miniature LOTR figures that would make wonderful colorful game pieces on an extra-large board.

As far as a bigger board goes the current one is going to be 40 by 28 inches or thereabouts so any larger and I think we are looking at the floor! The pieces already look rather special and any bigger would mean a huge board! Although they are not individually sculpted as such the leaders are mostly there and indeed Theoden begins at the Fords of Isen as does Denethor in Minas Tirith. Faramir is linked to a card and may appear in Osgilath and Prince Imrahil in Dol Amroth. Personal characters would be nice of course to complement those of the fellowship and not forgetting Gollum and the Balrog.

I'm sure the standard board is just fine. But I wouldn't mind a board so big that it has to go on the floor. Epic size components help to create an epic feel for the game. Although Lord of the Rings Risk is a moderately fun variation of Risk, I find the tiny pieces annoyingly small. I'm sure the WOTR pieces will be sizable and of high quality, but I still would enjoy putting together an epic size version of the game, especially if it is as enjoyable as all the playtesters claim.

Hi guys!
If there ever is an official add-on I would love to see the final treck through Mordor to get the attention. Maybe a separate board and increased detail.
BUT much of the games epic feeling and great fun factor rely on the simplicity of the ruels, the pace never slacks of due to difficult rules or ambiguities, any such add-ons would probably increase the risk of that happening.

Hi Veldrin, I do agree with you that my suggestion could (and almost certainly WOULD) increase the complexity of the game! I don't see this as a real problem, though, as this is WHY it would be an add-on! If you look at a lot of war games, board games and computer games, they normally put out a fairly simple 'vanilla' game for the general community, and then release increasingly more complex add-ons for the truly die-hard fans of the genre! 'Lord of the Rings' by Reiner Knizier is a case in point-and is a game I thoroughly LOVE, BTW ! If they were to bring out an add-on, I would definitely throw my weight behind the idea of full-sized 'sub-boards' of Eriador and Mordor-thus introducing the journey from the Shire to Rivendell, and better reflecting the journey to the 'Cracks of Doom'! Along with these boards, more figures, character cards and advanced rules for the die-hard fans would also be appreciated !! Yours, AussieLurker
