Just reading the description it looks like the game is prime for two. "In War of the Ring, one player takes control of the Free Peoples (FP), the other player controls Shadow Armies (SA)."
I have seen up to four can play the game. Does this mean FP "team" vs. Shadow "team"? Has anyone play tested with four players? I am wondering if it plays a little like Queen's gambit in this regard?

The standard game is for 2 players although there are rules for both 3 and 4 players. With 3 a single FP player is pitted against 2 SF players. With 4, one FP player takes Gondor and the Elves, the other Rohan, Dwarves and the North - the characters of the fellowship are also split between them. For the SF one takes the Sauron forces and the other Saruman's forces and those of the Southrons & Easterlings. There are a few modifications to the rules in terms of card draws and limits, restictions on card use and minor stuff like Nazgul recruitment. There are also rules for individual victories. Our group has playtested the 4 player over 10x and feel it works very well in comparison to the standard game.
