This was a solo game with National Action Tokens.
The fellowship got hit badly moving through the Mines of Moria. First Boromir, then Gandalf, then Aragorn fell to a succession of 2-3-3 tiles. Nevertheless, Frodo was barely scratched, and declared in Lorien.
The shadow did a good job of denying the Free NATs early. Worn with Sorrow and Toil caught There and Back Again in the Free's hand, spoiling their plans.
Finally the Shadow grew tired of "NAT denial" when Gandalf the White beamed into Fangorn and the Fellowship was moving well. Merry also 'went alone' to activate Dale, which went to war. Had to start cycling cards, don'cha know. First stop: Minas Tirith. Farmir struck the first blows for the free, killing two orcish armies and retreating in good order. The defenders of the White City stood firm, while Gondor mustered in Pelargir.
To counter, the Southrons waded in, pushing them back to Dol Amroth and bottling them up in siege.
But another small Gondor army was built in Lamedon. Together with some bad die rolls, a Sudden Strike, and some luck, the Witch King, four nazgul, and the entire orcish army was routed at Minas Tirith! Gondor had but one regular left standing East of Dol Amroth.
The shadow took Rohan and Dale, and reinforced the siege of Dol Amroth with Olog Hai. Gandalf the White proved the swifter right into the stronghold!
Gimli fell defending the fellowship. Then the Shadow performed a double-turn-stall. They even tried for a third turn, but Isuldur's Bane was 'only' the third and last '3' tile.
Lorien got trashed by Shadows on the Misty Mountains.
Woodland Realm eventually became a super-fortress, with Merry, [1/0/1] from Dale, and [2/1/1] thanks to Grimbeorn the Old, plus four elven elites. Erebor was also MAX_DWARF of [2/2/2]. Even with Horde from the East, the Shadow was going nowhere there.
Instead, Mordor Beta came out and took down Minas Tirith. The Mouth made the long trip to Dol Amroth to kill Gandalf the White and take the swan city. The shadow had 11 vp.
However, the same turn the Fellowship destroyed the ring. Eventually the Shadow's rediculous onslaught of 3s and 2s dried up (just about all out), and Frodo found some lucky 1s and 0s. He eked out a victory with 8 corruption. He'd drawn one of the four active blue tiles, to 1 of 1 red tile (Give it to usss) and 1 eye.
The shadow lost the WK early, but compensated by getting and keeping the Palantir.
The fellowship was 100% efficient at converting companions to corruption absorption - the FSP took net 23 corruption.
I didn't agree with 7S before, but I think if NATs are weakened (see Goodgulf's contemporaneous post), that something must be done to make companions more seperatable.
