After not playing for about haft a year, I finally got some friends together, to start playing again. But after having re-read the rules once again, I have a few questions. I can't seem to get my old login working, hence the new user 1) Are Companions subject to the "stop at shadow stronghold"-rule, when leaving the fellowship ? The rules state: (Companion movement) (...) but must stop upon entering a Region containing a Shadow Stronghold (When seperating)(...) Character movement uses the rules explained earlier in this rules set. 1a) Progress is 2 (from Rivendell), can Strider seperate and end up in Lorien ? (5 spaces through Moria) 1b) Progress is 5 (from Rivendell), can Strider seperate and end up in Minas Tirith ? (also through Moria, but the fellowship progress get them to the other side of Moria, before Strider exits) 2) The rules state When a Stronghold is under siege, the troops within can only be attacked by an Army in the same Region using an Action Die for battle during the Action Resolution step.
I have always understood that ANY action die could be used, but after reading magicgeek's rewrite of the rules, I'm not sure.. Can any die be used ? 3) Moving ships. If I have an army in Pelagir, can I use the first half of an army die to move a ship to Pelagir, and then the 2nd half or the die to move an army from Umbar to Pelagir (or does the ship need to be at Pelagir before I start moving) 4) When using the ships to move/attack, does the ship move along with the army, or do both ships just stay put ?

1. Yes, they have to stop. In both of your examples, the companions would have to stop at Moria.
2. No, just a die you could normally attack with. I guess the intent of that sentence is only to put further restrictions on it.
3. Yes, that works. You move things one at a time.
4. Yes.

I agree with that guy.
Makes me feel all warm inside to think I stopped that particular problem. Because I lost a game to it in England.
How do you argue with someone that is quoting the rulebook at you?
The only way to show the correct way to play is to look at the way the words are used in the same sentences elsewhere in the rules. The words on how to use a palantir are the same, but noone thinks you can use a Muster to draw a card.
I think this is an artifact of the rules originally being thought of in Italian.

Well, if the original poster wanted to just play by the rulebook, he wouldn't have had to ask the question. In this case, three things make the non-rulebook answer a good one. 1) It's what was intended. 2) Most people play that way. 3) It's less broken. Yeah, I agree.

Thx for the answers :-) Especially the stop-in-Moria part will make a difference in our games :-)
I love discussing the rules, but of the ~8 people of us that play the game, I'm still the only one who have read the rules and/or the FAQ's. My friend even bought the expansion (to use with my game), but he hansn't read any of the rules - they all prefer to play the game, and let me worry about the rules :-) So I guess I'm the only one who enjoys rule-discussion :-)

You have a group of 8 war of the ring players? Holy macaronii! You must be in the center of the WotR universe.

You must be in the center of the WotR universe. yup, it's great - we are about 4 who's played a lot, and 4 who are rellativly new to the game. So we hardly ever play anything but 2on2 :-) It's great, since I find 2vs2 (we have rules that say that you cannot talk to your partner about anything game-related) a lot more fun, than 1on1 :-) If anyone is ever in Copenhagen, then we'd love to play a game or two :-)

I have just started to play expansion and I have a question too. If stronghold is attacked and it is already under damage (1/6) and attacker rolls 1;2;1;5;6 and reroll 1 to 5, does he breach stronghold (6) and score two hits more (5 & 5) or just breach it? I belive he scores all hits, but it is better to ask than play against the rules.

Thanks a lot! However, I have another question. It is about Theoden in Gondor scenario. There are two Rohan recruitment areas - "To Rohan" & "Forgotten Road". On Theoden card it says: "When he is ready, use a Character die result to place Théoden, Éomer, two Rohan Leaders, and one Rohan Riders Unit in the “To Rohan” Recruitment Area" At the other hand, in rules it says: "When Théoden enters play, flip all Recruitment tokens in the Rohan Recruitment Area" - 32 • BATTLES OF THE WAR OF THE RING - BATTLE FOR GONDOR, CHARACTERS AND THE RECRUITMENT AREAS Do you flip tokens only in "To Rohan"?

Initially, Rohan Recruitment tokens may only be placed in the To Rohan Recruitment Area. The Forgotten Road area may only be used if the Woses Recruitment token is flipped in the To Rohan Recruitment Area. Since Rohan tokens aren't flipped until Theoden enters the game, nothing will be in the Forgotten Road Recruitment Area when that happens.
