Hi All!
I'm new here and to FF's WotR. My background is primarily more hardcore wargaming, but these days gaming time is so scarce that its nice to have a game that can be played in an evening (and plays very quickly) instead of several months and that doesn't require its own room to set up!
I would like to see an expanded Character game. OK, maybe this idea is lingering from SPI's WotR, but it would greatly enhance the immersion aspect of the game. Considering how many one-on-one battles were fought in the book, it seems odd that the Characters can sort of just float around the board, seemingly unhindered (and unstoppable, except in an abstract way).
A Character game would allow a host of new Good and Bad guys (with cool minis), but would also impact both the Hunt and the military campaigns. Allowing Leaders to challenge one-on-one on the battlefield would be cool. I mean, Theoden vs. the WK is the ultimate example in the book. This would also give a greater incentive to separating Companions, which is a serious drawback in the game IMO (its a gamey strategy compared to what actually happened). Orc leaders could be introduced to enhance the flavor of the SP OOB.
Allowing combat after a successful Hunt would increase the tension of the Fellowship track. This would allow you to manage the Fellowship a little bit, instead of that aspect being basically random. You could even bring them into play in Mordor (or right before the Mordor track, as in Shelob).
You could also augment or add special abilities for all kinds of effects in Char. combat or military combat. I could envision new leaders such as Elrond, Glorfindel, Theodred, Eomer, Eowyn, Halbarad, etc for the good guys as well as Shagrat, Gorbag, Gothmog etc for the bad guys. Also new Minions such as a Balrog, Shelob, Radagast, Wormtongue and of course Gollum!, with special rules for his (mis-)use.
That and some new units and specialized combat would greatly add to the flavor of the game, although (even used as I am to much more complex combat) one of the things I do like about WotR is the speed and simplicity of the combat mechansims.
