Veldrin - Yes these suggestions were only for the base game. I agree that the expansion offers much more corruption absorption than the base game.
I like using NATs in both versions so I'm leaning toward a solution that would be viable in both versions. I like some of the ideas under MrWeasely's Companions to Battle! thread and they may be better suited for both expansion and base game.
The alternative of drawing/playing other cards is interesting too since it would allow for a "free" separation and provide potential for surprise combinations.

New idea: Companions remain out of play for a number of turns equal to the corruption they absorbed in the hunt. Then they return to play somewhere. Say the Fellowship's Last Known Position during the Fellowship phase.
Hobbits, therefore, would always come back after only 1 turn. If Strider eats the '3', he's "dead" for quite some time, but if he gets taken out by a '1', he'll be back almost immediately.
