This was our fourth game and it was filled with highpoints. I played the Shadow and my buddy played the FP.
The Game started on a weird note as out of 6 action dice (I had had put one in the track pool) I came up with 4 eyes and 2 Characters (swords)! The FP player glanced at this pathetic result and at his conversely awesome 2 reinforce/action + 2 will of the west results. He grinned and I winced.
The FP then started the elves towards war. I played next and used my character dice to move the Nazguls. The turn ended with none of the shadow forces at war and the elves along with passive Gondor and Rohan well on their way to war. Gandalf also left the company and moved towards Rohan with the two hobbits giving me visions of White and Ents galore. To my dismay and despite taunting, the FP player did not attempt to move the fellowship….
Turn two saw me roll 2 more eyes out of 6. The rest of my actions were: 1 character, 2 reinforce/action and 1 palantir. The FP rolled 3 wills of the west and one action! This turn, Gandalf moved again and then became the White! Along the way he activated Rohan. The FP sent Aragorn towards Gondor along with Boromir and Legolas and Gimli towards the North to wake up the Dwarves and men of the North. Gollum took charge of the fellowship. The shadow did not stay at rest however as I moved the Haradrim to War. Why them you ask? Simple: I had the Pirates of Umbar Card and Dol Amroth was basically unguarded (3 units). I used the Palantir to play a card that booted the fellowship out of Rivendell…this would come in handy on the next turn….
Turn 3 saw the Shadow gather strength as I rolled no eyes and a good mix of reinforce and action results. This allowed me to reinforce the Haradrim at Umbar and to lay siege to Dol Amroth. The FP player concentrated on moving the companions and activated Rohan while bringing it one step from war. Saruman also came into play this turn as Isengard went to war. I was also able to play a card that allowed me to draw a hunt tile. This resulted in the company suffering 3 corruption points….things were looking up. By now, however Gimli and Legolas were almost at Dale and Erebror….
Turn 4 saw Dol Amroth fall under the boot of the Haradrim and Gondor and Rohan at war! I also managed to bring Mordor to war and to reinforce them. Minas Tirith started to see a gathering cloud to the East. I also reinforced Isengard and the Ents tried a rush there but to no avail and they were unable to harm me. This turn also saw another card being played and this resulted in 2 more corruption points for the fellowship.
Turn 5 and 6 were war turns. I pushed on to Minas Tirith but Boromir reached it in time and the siege began. Unexplicably, Aragorn went to Pelargir and took charge of a few errant Gondor units there. By now, Rohan was strong and had two armies (one at Helms Deep and one at Edoras. The Edoras Army moved East to the aid of Minas Tirith. I saw the squeeze coming but was still confident (or stupid enough) to send a raiding party into Pelargir just as Aragorn became Elessar. I crushed the army of Elessar in one fell swoop and the new King died at the hands of my Troll and orcs. I had little time to bask however as Rohan plowed into my forces at Minas Tirith and inflicted 5 hits on the first wave to my zero hits in return. I pulled back the army along with the Witch King who I had placed there earlier in the turn (also activating the Dwarves and Men of the North). Rohan stayed where it was and the Minas Tirith Garisson sallied forth.
The next turn saw the Shadow move on Lorien from a reinforced Moria and a strong Haradrim Army appear in the North East. Isengard also moved on Rohan leaving anough Uruk Hai behind to ward off any Ent attacks. A couple of cards also reinforced Angmar and the North. The FP player massively reinforced Minas Tirith but inexplicably failed to attack my weak army at Osgiliath. I ended the turn by pulling this army back to Mordor to lick its wounds. The fellowship was also discovered this turn as it tried to move and it suffered another 2 corruption points putting it at 7!
The next turn saw the hope of the fellowship lessened as Lorien fell under the forces of Moria. The Haradrim Army to the North East continued to mass and at the end of the turn blitzed into the Hills to crush the lone dwarf unit there. This brought the dwarves closer to war. The FP player spent most of this turn trying to heal the fellowship with cards and trying to move it. This was achieved as he moved twice undetected. I also moved a Nazgul to the area of the fellowship…the re-roll would come in handy.
The next turn saw another turn of events as my Haradrim Army took Dale but was then crushed by the Dwarves who decided to fight in the open at Erebror. This meant that all FP forces were now at war. This of course roused the Mouth of Sauron into action….The Fellowship did suffer another 2 points of corruption but healed one, leaving it at 8.
The next turn saw the Shadow move West from Angmar with a reinforced army and 3 Nazguls. The Shire was overrun and with the help of combat cards the Grey Havens would be overrun soon. However, Dale was lost to me and the Dwarves were mustering in Erebror.
The next turns saw the end game as I was pushed back from Rivendell in style. However, the FP player remained timid at Minas Tirith and wasted an opportunity there. Helsm Deep was put under siege as was Mirkwood. The fellowship reached Mordor with 8 corruption and started its walk to mount doom. Sadly, it was irrevocably corrupted (reached 12) by the third step.
This was a game where the FP had a real crack at military victory. At Minas Tirith if he had pushed he could have done real damage and the Elves could have perhaps taken Moria. Rohan could have pressured Saruman more.
The fellowship suffered bad luck with the tiles and at the end he tried to move it often out of desperation. All in all, an entertaining game.
