This was our second game. I was the FP, and two friends of mine were playing on the shadow side.
At the beginning the SP put just one die or 2 into the pool, so in a couple of turn I had been able to declare in Lorien with just one hit, protected also by "a power too great". In the meanwhile I had moved Gandalf to activate the Shire (and the North). This maybe had been my first mistake, because I had to spend some dice to move him where he could be useful,in Fangorn (I had 2 Ent cards in my hand almost from the beginning). Also Strider and Boromir had left the Fsp, because Aragorn wanted to be crowned in Minas Tirith. From this moment on the Fsp never moved again, because a huge army leaded by nazgul and the Witch King had left Dol Guldur to set seige to the woods of Lorien, after having descarded the elf protection. I hadn't split any companions to lead the few defenders in Lorien and when it fell the Fsp began to suffer the menace of 3 re-rolls and in the pool there were always 3 or more eyes.
As soon as Saruman showed up in Orthanc Gandalf had thrown away his hold cloak to become the White and was waiting for an error of his old friend. A chance came when all the armies of Saruman left Isengard to the fords of Isen.Theodred, thanks to his scout, retreated into the Helm's deep and waited for the attack. Surprise! The Ents killed Saruman without even throw the dice. But in the meanwhile the isengard units had already taken Helm. A new army of Rohirrim leaded by Gandalf moved to take Othanc and then, instead of attacking a weak Moria, moved to retake the Helm's deep. But they never did.Another error, maybe.
Aragorn, with his new king authority had gathered a huge host in Minas Tirith (4 elite, 4 regular, Boromir, Aragorn and Denethor) and was waiting for the Sauron armies to leave Minas Morgul, to prepare an ambush (Faramir's rangers was in my hand from the very first turn). A lot of armies waiting for an enemy who never came... it remembered to me "the desert of the tartars", a very famous italian novel...
Only Dwarves and the north were still not at war and a huge army of Easterlings was in eastern Ruhn. They suddendly moved 3 regions westwards and stopped in the old forest road, ready to attack the wooden realm. With my surprise it fell very soon, and Erebor and Dale followed its fate as well, showing to the SP how easy 5 VP could be captured in the North.I was too far from Mordor and I chose the military way,but with little hope. Some armies where waiting help to siege Rivendell, and some dunlendings showed up at the door of Bree leading to the Shire. The SP had already 9 VP and my siege to the helm's deep to take back 2 of them before it was too late was incredibly unlucky, even with the help of gandalf. And in the stronghold there were only 3 regular isengard units!
Then another front had been opened: the pirates of Umbar had landed in Lamedon, and the Sp was missing only one point while in Pelargir there were only 2 units. I used a retreat from an attack on Osgiliath to strengthen Pelargir, but the Haradrim decided instead to attack Dol Amroth.
We had to stop the game because we were playing in a pub, and it was closing. I think I was going to lose on the very next turn,if Helm's deep was not going to fall, but I was keeping the idea of a mad run to Umbar (so reaching 4 victory points).
I think that my lack of experience made me reply too much to my enemies attack, neglecting the Fsp that had started very well (declared in Lorien on turn 4 with only one hit and 4 companions alive).Probably my next game will be a 4 one, to see how is have an ally on the free nation side.
