I played my first full game with three friends the other night. It took us a bit over five hours. I'm sure we will reduce that time greatly the next time we play. We had just a few rules discussions, which is quite good considering it was the first time through for all of us.
At the start, Saruman mobilized his forces, smashed the army of Rohan at the Fords of Isen, and then pushed through to capture Helm's Deep well before Rohan could react in any meaningful way.
Gandalf the Grey was killed in the Dimrill Dale and then reappeared as the White in Fangorn. A steady trickle of Ents spent themselves in a fruitless stand against Isengard, while the Fellowship prepared to leave Lorien. "Threats and Promises" kept the North and the Dwarves entirely dis-interested in joining the fight against Mordor.
The Dark Lord gathered a mass of orcs and Nazgul, led by the Witch King himself. This force crushed Osgiliath and laid seige to Minas Tirith. But just in the knick of time, Gandalf the White led a sizeable force of Rohirrim down the "Paths of the Woses" and relieved the siege. Glory for the free peoples was fleeting. A force of Haradrim marched on Pelargir and then Dol Amroth, Easterlings marched up to the borders of Dale, and Sauron deployed new forces in Dol Guldur and in Minas Morgul.
Simultaneously, all of these forces advanced. Aragorn led a valiant defense of Minas Tirith but ultimatley the defenders were wiped out to a man. Gandalf guarded Lorien from attack, but Dol Amroth, and Dale both fell to the evil forces.
Sensing the impending doom, the ringbearers pushed recklessly on towards Mount Doom. Gimli, Boromir and Legalos all died defending the ringbearers, and then lastly, Frodo himself was bent to the desires of the Dark Lord. Evil had triumphed.
The quest was pressed hard because a military victory was inevitable on the next turn.
