What is this actually, forfeit his leadership for the duration of the entire battle..?
For me, a military conflict between 2 regions initiates a battle. A battle can have various rounds, i.e. if the shadow player extends by reducing an elite to a regular, by using a card that states the battle can last for a maximum of 3 rounds, etc.
So, forfitting Gandalf the White's leadership abilities to negate all Shadow leadership (excluding Witch King any version) needs to be stated BEFORE the battle actually takes place, as it can have many rounds and you can't decide that again per round, correct?
Normally, per round, you play battle cards and decide on your leadership abilities, but with Gandalf, it seems required you indicate that at the start of the ENTIRE battle, meaning even if Shadow decides to leave 1 Shadow army unit + ALL Shadow leaders out of THE FIRST ROUND AFTER Gandalf declares his leadership ability you are basically denying indeed the shadow leadership re-rolls but worse, the shadow in ROUND 2 can decide to enter his leaders again but Gandalf is still negating his for the ENTIRE BATTLE...I find this weird...how is this rule?
1. Conflict is declared by Shadow
2. Card is played by Shadow allowing 3 rounds without reducing
3. Gandalf the White is in play / 4 RingWraiths are in play + 1 witch king
4. Attacker (Shadow) declares he uses entire army -1 in round 1 (EXCEPT HIS leaders + 1 army unit serve as rear guard)
5. Attacker plays combat card / Free Peoples are not allowed as stated on card round 1 no free peoples battle card
6. Defender states he DOES NOT use Gandalf's ability as no wringwraiths participate
7. After round 1, Shadow now ENTERS his entire army (all wringwriaths) and states you did not use Gandalf in round 1 so now also not allowed in round 2 or 3 or any subsequent as long as I keep reducing elites.
Is that correct??
Also, related but different. As Free Peoples I'm attacked in an open field battle, Gandalf the white is with the army, I wish to split the defending army in a rear guard to protect Gandalf. He + 1 army unit remain out of the battle and if rest is lost, they retreat if possible to the next free region? Is that allowed or can defending army's not play with a rear guard?
Thanks!!!
