The sequence is clear:
1) attacker declares and chooses card 2) defender declares and chooses card. 3) both play cards simultaneously
But the clue is the sentence "However, the back of the chosen card is always visible to the opponent."
Does this mean, that in (2) the defender has the information which type of event card the attacker played?

Yes, once the attacker has chosen a card, the defending player should know if it is a Strategy or Character Event Card.
