Balrog & Black Gate vs Smeagol

Fellowship is in rivendell, counter on 5. I declare in Lorien, Gimli is the guide. I move the fellowship to Lorien via Moria & the Balrog. My opponent draws 1st for the Balrog, an eye eliminating Gimli leaving pippin the guide. Then He discards "black gates are closed" to draw another tile, he draws smeagol, smeagol becomes the guide immediately "AFTER" I have declared in a FP stronghold. Please tell me this is right as I won a close game cuz of this.

2. Then, later he pulled a three, I eliminate smeagol, pippin, merry to take away all 3 damage and gollum becomes the guide. This was also right?

Based on this FAQ entry:

Q If the Fellowship is Declared in a Free Peoples City or Stronghold, causing Sméagol to be discarded and a Hunt tile must be drawn because the Fellowship passed through a Shadow Stronghold, is the Hunt damage applied before Sméagol is discarded or after?

A Sméagol isn't discarded until the Fellowship figure has reached the Declared destination so he is still in the Fellowship when it passes through the Shadow Stronghold so he can be sacrificed or randomly drawn.

I would say that Sméagol becomes the Guide before the Fellowship reaches Lorien, so he would be discarded due to the declaration.

This is correct.

Okay, so even though I 1st "declare the fellowship. I THEN move the fellowship through Moria, then its the SP choice of wether he wants to use "Gates Closed" card before or after he pulls a tile for the Balrog. If a smeagol tile is drawn, he immediatly becomes the guide, then, when the fellowship is placed IN Lorien, Smeagol must leave (so the DECLARING is like retro effective).

Yes. Because the Fellowship passed through Moria before it arrived in Lorien, the event generated by the tile draw (Sméagol becoming the Guide) occurs before the event generated by the arrival in Lorien (the Fellowship declaration).
