Daring defiance vs. Words of power - does "defender first" apply?
If so, what if SA is defender, but FP has more than one companion with leadership in the battle? After SA has applied Words of power, FP still has companion leadership to forfeit, which means Daring defiance is applicable, which would cancel the effects of the SA card, which would bring back the leadership of the companion chosen by the SA... I get confused because "cancel the effects" to me sounds as if it could mean retroactively, but I guess it can't.

Since the effect of Daring Defiance is to cancel the Shadow player's Combat card, that effect "kicks in" before that of Words of Power. As a result, Daring Defiance takes precedence over Words of Power regardless of who the defender is. The defender's card takes precedence only when both cards take effect at the same time.

Aha, so there is in principle a "possibly cancel opponents card" step before all other steps in a combat round. Thank you for clarifying! But... that would mean that if FP has a single companion with leaderhip in the battle, Daring defiance still has precedence over Words of power? In this situation the Words of power in practice has a "cancel card" effect, but only in practice...

Aha, so there is in principle a "possibly cancel opponents card" step before all other steps in a combat round. Thank you for clarifying! Not exactly. Cancelling of the card occurs immediately after the cards are played, not as a separate step. But... that would mean that if FP has a single companion with leaderhip in the battle, Daring defiance still has precedence over Words of power? In this situation the Words of power in practice has a "cancel card" effect, but only in practice... It doesn't cancel the card itself, just its effects. It's a subtle but important difference.

Cancelling of the card occurs immediately after the cards are played, not as a separate step. OK, "step" is more well-defined than I thought. But still things clarified for me. But... that would mean that if FP has a single companion with leaderhip in the battle, Daring defiance still has precedence over Words of power? In this situation the Words of power in practice has a "cancel card" effect, but only in practice... It doesn't cancel the card itself, just its effects. It's a subtle but important difference. In case of a single FP companion with leadership, I wouldn't say that Words of power cancels the effects of Daring defiance. It removes the prerequisite of Daring defiance. How do I interpret that subtle difference? Well, you have already handed me a solution: Daring defiance occurs immediately after cards are played, Words of power I guess occurs a minute moment later, before combat strengths and leaderships are calculated. Is that correct? Maybe I should just settle with "Daring defiance always has precedence over Words of power"? It's a simple and reasonable rule, and need not fit perfectly into which-card-acts-first-according-to-its-text.
