I've been involved in a discussion over at BGG concerning advancing after combat, and I'd like to get some other opinions on the subject. An official ruling would also be great.
The rules say only this:
There are no explicit guidelines on how an Army is split if only part of the units advance. Because of this, I think it's reasonable to use the general movement rules on splitting Armies to determine how this is done. However, a certain ambiguity is introduced because there's no mention of how to treat Characters and Leaders - only units.
This in itself isn't really a problem, because once again we can look to the general movement rules for guidelines. The real ambiguity comes when we look at attacks initiated by a Character die versus attacks initiated by an Army die. Attacks initiated by Character dice require that at least one Character or Leader be included in the attacking Army. Movements of Armies initiated by Character dice require that at least one Character or Leader be included in the moving Army. To me, the logical extension of this is that after an attack that is initiated by a Character die, if only part of the attacking Army advances, at least one Character or Leader must advance with it.
Again, this rationale is based on the fact that the rule for advancing after combat mentions only units, and I am relying on the general rules for movement and splitting of Armies to resolve the ambiguity.
Am I reading too much into this? Should it matter which type of die initiated the combat once it's over?
The rules say only this:
If the defending Army is eliminated or retreats, the attacker may immediately move all or part of the units participating in the attack in the embattled Region.
