I've played WotR several times and have greatly enjoyed each playing. Each game has been very close--which I find an amazing achievement!
Component Suggestions:
(1) Font size on the cards is too small.
(2) It'd be great if the clarifications from the FAQ could be incorporated into the cards and rules, even a PDF version.
(3) For whatever reason, I find the rules good for the first time reader, but difficult for someone trying to find an answer to specific questions. Maybe a better organization would help, or a paragraph numbering system plus a detailed index.
Gameplay Suggestions:
(1) The Elves are very brittle.
(2) Much of the board often doesn't come into active play. (In my games, we permit a 5-unit army "behind-the-line" move at the end of the turn for both players.) I think an extra action dice per side would also get more of the board in play.
Expansion Desires:
(1) Additional Event Cards, so that a smaller percentage of the cards come into play every game.
(2) A Gollum figure.
(3) Gameplay from The Shire to Rivendell.
(4) A more race-specific, Stronghold-specific, and Character/Minion-specific combat system (as an optional rule).
(5) Mini-quests along the way that give either player a minor advantage for completing them, perhaps randomly drawn at game start.
(6) Make it easier to bring Free Peoples nations to war.
(7) Special figures and cards for Galadriel, Elrond, Cirdan, Faramir, Wormtongue, the Balrog, Eagles, Grond.
(8) Add Ent figures.
(9) Naval movement: Gray Havens and the Southerlings.
(10) A bit more control, for both sides, once the Fellowship reaches Mordor.
(11) Add special figures for Gandalf the White and Aragorn.
(12) Do something a little more cool with the Elven Rings (but still permit the dice-changing option, a great balancer for bad-luck).
(13) Supercool: Play the Silmarillion!
