I submitted a modified version of this to the 'geek' about a week ago, hasn't been put up, so I've posted it here for your enjoyment
Session report of a 4 player game, I was playing FP.
Month 1: Gandalf leads the fellowship, Sauron’s armies move in Mordor, Gandalf pushes the fellowship onwards and they get discovered in Hollin, Gandalf falls defending the hobbits. Southrons & Easterlings maneuver in Harad, while the fellowship hides. Sauron looks into his palantir (and draws a card), Boromir blows the Horn of Gondor. Searching Nazgul circle Hollin, North Dunland, Moria and the South Downs.
Fairly standard opening - we (FP) wanted to get Gandalf out early, Shadow deciced to move Nazgul to blanket cover the possible locations we could move to, Shadow didn't get any muster dice ;D
Month 2: The Power of Tom Bombadil is revealed in the Old Forest, but Isengard goes to war. Strider moves the fellowship, while Sauron’s armies move out of Mordor via the Black Gate. Rohan retreats a regular and the leader from the Fords to Helm’s Deep, on hearing rumors of Half Orcs and Goblin Men in Orthanc. Thranduil’s Archers muster while most of the searching Nazgul return to lead armies.
Again a distinct lack of Muster dice - so no Gandalf the White, looks like an attack on Lorien is looming
Month 3: Strider leads the fellowship, safely moving unseen while Sauron goes openly to war. Feeling the need for haster Strider moves the fellowship again, but Boromir is forced to use (discard) the Horn of Gondor and Frodo uses the ring for 2 corruption points. Saruman declares as the Wizard of Many Colors, and Gondor withdraws from Osgilath. Sauron breeds more orcs in the Pits of Mordor sending the reinforcements to Dol Guldur, Moria and Mount Gundabad. Dain IronFoot’s Guard muster in the Lonely Mountain but Olog-Hai appear in Dol Guldur and the Easterlings move in the East.
No will of the West dice But we're pushing the fellowship along, didn't fancy a 3rd fellowship movement
Month 4: The Fellowship reach Lorien and heal their wounds and mourn the demise of Gandalf. Gwahir the Windlord bears Pippen to Minas Tirith and the arrival of the Halfling activates Gondor. Southrons & Easterlings prepare for war. Strider feeling the need for haste reluctantly leads the fellowship from Lorien - On and On they Went while Sauron prepares to search for the ring. Again Strider moves the fellowship, disaster they are spotted in Eastemnet and Frodo has to use the ring. This news of the fellowship is the spark that brings the Southrons & Easterlings into the war, while Strider desperately hides the fellowship from the searchers. Sauron advances an army into North Ithilien and another from Dol Guldur to South Anduin Vale. The Southrons move into South Ithilien and the Easterlings into North Dorwinion.
d**n dice, still no Will of the West - but the fellowship are really rumbling now, we could have split off strider, but figured we needed his ability to hide the fellowship, holding Athelas was another big factor too
Month 5: Strider finds Athelas and completely heals Frodo. Hill Trolls join the army in South Anduin Vales, while Faramir’s Rangers make a strike for no effect. Mustering of a Long-Planned War gathers more shadow armies in Mordor, and while the eye is looking inwards Strider safely moves the fellowship. Nazgul appear in Moria and Minas Morgul and the elven response to this dreadful news is to move closer to war. Saruman causes the Rage of the Dunlendings, mustering an army in the Gap of Rohan. Nazgul move, circling Eastemnet searching for the Fellowship others join the army in the South Anduin Vales. Saruman moves the Dunlendings from the Gap into Orthanc and the Southrons advance into West Harondor.
STILL no Will of the West, but the fellowship is still racing on, and Saruman seems pretty ineffectual, can't believe Rohan hasn't suffered an attack as yet!
Month 6: Strider departs the fellowship, leaving it in the capable hands of Boromir, rushing to Anorien, activating Rohan. The Elves move closer to war as a Horde from the East appears in East Rhun. Boromir successfully leads the fellowship past the searching eye. The Shadow is Moving and armies move into Dimril Dale from the Anduin Vales and other armies move into the Dead Marshes. Saruman breeds elite troops in Orthanc, Lorien is assaulted by Sauron and the Elves are finally dragged into the War, as Lorien becomes besieged. Gondor moves towards war, while Saruman continues breeding elite troops. The siege of Lorien begins in ernest with Foul Stench from the Nazgul which only leads to Confusion within the shadow army and the siege is a disaster with the shadow army taking 4 losses for no damage to the Elves. The Riders of Theoden muster in Edoras, while the Southron army in the south attacks Pelegir, taking it and bringing Gondor into the war.
Again no Will of the West! But the Siege in Lorien was really significant, magic combat dice perhaps? Evil side is finally getting it's act together military, but we have a plan ...
Month 7: Strider remembers the paths of the dead and musters the Dead Men of Dunharrow attacking the Southrons in Pelegir, inflicting just 1 loss but forcing the army to retreat, Pelegir is liberated. The WitchKing appears in Dol Guldur, activating the Free Peoples. Strider reveals himself as Aragorn in Pelegir. Saruman attacks the Fords of Isen, but Scouts allow the defender to retreat to Helm’s Deep. Armies muster in Minas Tirith and Pelegir, while more Nazgul appear. Nazgul fly around the map reinforcing the siege on Lorien, but Gandalf the White returns to Lorien amid great rejoicing from the Elves.
Horray, Gandalf appears, "Sorry I'm late he says, what have I missed?" and Aragorn declares himself King Returned, I guess Will of the West are like buses, wait for ages for one and then they turn up in pairs
Month 8: Boromir hears the call of war, and leaves the fellowship to return to Minas Tirith, leaving Gimli to lead the fellowship. Rohan moves towards war as Saruman musters more orcs. Legolas and Gimli sensing the doom of Lorien rush to its aid We Prove Swifter they declare as they slip past the besieging army and enter Lorien, leaving just 3 hobbits in the Fellowship – Merry taking the lead. Orcs from Moria advance into Dimril Dale, while Aragorn moves the army from Pelegir to Lossarnach. Saruman musters again! And surprisingly Sauron retreats from the siege of Lorien to Parth Celebrant, perhaps it is the presence of the heroes from the fellowship? An elite musters in Lorien, while an Orc Patrol searches in vain for the fellowship and Gollum demands Give it to Us. At the end of the month the Southrons and Easterlings retake the undefended Pelegir.
Sauron's a wimp! After getting a bloody nose first time, the presence of companions puts him off again, Lorien is saved
Month 9: Troops muster in Minas Tirith and Dol Amroth. A Nazgul Search reveals the Fellowship in Eastern Emyn Muil, but immediately the hobbits manage to hide. Something stirs in Shelob’s Lair and the hobbits discover the Mithril Coat and Sting that Frodo had kept hidden for so long. Army from the Dead Marshes advances into the Druadan Forest. The power of the Elven ring is used to move the fellowship, while the the Southron army attacks Aragorn in Lossarnach, a Sudden Strike (for 1 hit) is not enough, They are Terrible and the army is eliminated and Isildur’s Heir is killed. Sauron moves his army from Druadan Forest into Anorien and Rohan finally is at war, while the army in Dimril Dale retreats to Moria. Southrons recruit in Harad. Edoras is attacked from Anorien, Theoden withdraws into Westemnet after suffering 2 losses. Another Elven ring is used to move the fellowship, while Sauron gazes into his Palantir and draws an Event card.
Loss of Aragorn is a blow, but the fellowship are really close now, and a military victory for the shadow appears a distant dream - can we hold off the hordes for long enough?
Month 10: The fellowship declare in Morranon and enter Mordor, with Merry still leading them.
The hobbits put on their Elven Cloaks while the Sauron army in Edoras attacks Westemnet the shattered remnants of the Rohan army limp into Helm’s Deep. The Fellowship successfully moves in mordor but merry is captured by the eye while Frodo takes a corruption point, Gollum leads the Fellowship. Saruman musters again in Dunland. The Shadow Lengthens, as the armies of Saruman move. Rohan musters a leader in Helm’s Deep, while the army in Parth Celbrant advances into Rohan. Gollum declares There is Another Way and Frodo heals. The Southrons & Easterlings muster in Harad, the Orcs Multiplying Again in the north while the Easterlings muster too.
No Mouth? What are the Shadow doing? And mustering at this late stage, surely they have enough troops to do the damage now. I think the Shadow have been too timid by half, perhaps the early setback in Lorien knocked the fight out of them?
Month ll: Frodo remembers the Phial of Galadriel, Saruman finally moves from the fords to lay siege to Helm’s Deep. Sam readies his Elven Rope while Sauron declares the Ring is Mine. The fellowship successfully move in Mordor (0 tile drawn). The Fighting Uruk-Hai attack Helm’s Deep with Devilry of Orthanc, the Rage of the Ents doesn’t help much, a second Devilry of Orthanc softens the defenders more, and Helm’s Deep falls on the 3rd assault. Rohan is conquered and out of the war. Minas Tirith push out a regular from Dol Guldur into Lamedon and a regular from Minas Tirith to retake the Druadan Forest. Nazgul fly north to reinforce the armies there.
Hmm, perhaps I spoke to soon, Helm's Deep in one turn, that's impressive (or depressing), still no Mouth though ... and we've finally drawn those useful FP tiles for the bag!
To be continued ... [as this post is getting very long]
