This was a four-player game – all newbies to this game.
I was the rule judge.
The Fellowship, having been foretold the rise of the dark lord Sauron, decided to set out quickly from Rivendale towards the realm of Mordor. Their action was met with the appearance of Sarumon in Orthanc; and rumors of a great host moving in from the east. The Free Peoples were slow to see the threat. No one took steps to move towards war.
Blood was first spilt on the Gap of Rohan. Forces from Isengard drove the defending Horse Lords back towards Helm Deep. A battle outside the great fortress sapped the attacker's forces enough to prevent any realistic chance at besieging the StrongHold. It became a stalemate while each side waited for reinforcements.
The fellowship hadn’t been heard from in sometime, when one day Merry showed up in Bree to rally the locals and take them back towards the Shire. He arrived to find the once peaceful lands occupied by Warg Riders from Isengard! A dire battle was fought and, by grace of fate (and good rolling) the Shire was retaken.
Meanwhile, Gandalf (the soon to be "White") appeared at Minas Tirith just as the gates of Mordor opened and poured forth a force like had never been seen before. In addition, the Southron had arrived at the same time to aid the Dark Lord, as well has lay siege to Dol Amroth. To make matters worse, the Fellowship was spotted in route to the Black Gate. Despite Boromir’s best effort (and life), the Fellowship found themselves at the receiving end of much corruption.
The great battle of Minas Tirith began with wave after wave of Sauron’s army smashing against the defender’s walls. Elsewhere, Dol Amroth, Helms Deep and even Lorien came under attack. Despite the onslaught, all the Free People’s Strongholds held. The host besieging Minas Tirith was so weakened by their attack, that Gandalf considered riding out to meet them!
In the end the Fellowship made the last leg of the journey up to Mount Doom with out any orcs, trolls, other evil creatures in sight. In fact, the fellowship’s corruption actually went down on the last turn! The ring was thrown into the lava and evil was vanquished forever. If memory serves me, the Dark Lord didn’t manage a single Victory Point! He lost 30 units trying to take Minas Tirith alone; and there were still 5 units and Gandalf left to defend the White City when the Ring was destroyed.
Everyone enjoyed the game, but the Shadow players were pretty mad about how hard it was to crack the Strongholds. I got to say they rolled just awful. Can’t wait to play again. Oh, and sorry if I misspelled some of the Middle Earth place names!
