I just bought the game 10 days ago and played 4 times already. Our first game was to learn the game but still, was quite interesting.
The beginning was a disaster for me, as overlord of the FP. SAuron struck hard and fast at Osgiliath. I has reinforced the ruined City to make him pay for it. It proved an error. The gondorian survivors retreated to Minas Tirith, but too few. The Stronghold was taken quickly afterwards, and the black army, led by the Witch King, streamed towards Dol Amroth.
Meanwhile, Rivendell was besieged and captured.
Saruman was gathering strength and took the Isen Fords quite easily. The army of Rohirrim was destoryed and the Helm's Deep falled shortly afterwards.
Well, things were looking quite dark for my FP. But the Company had slowly made its way toward Mordor, and I had dispatched several companions to make a last stand. Therefore, Gandalf the White protected Lorien, while Elessar defended Dol Amroth.
And then, the tide turned... The Witch King assaulted Dol Amroth but was repulsed with heavy losses. Elessar counter-attacked and destroyed the Army of his Archenemy, killing him. Lorien resisted several assaults.
The military offensives of Sauron had come to an halt, and he still needed 2 VP to win. The company, reduced to Frodo, Sam and Gollum entered Mordor. There was hope in the FP hearts. What seemed a crushing defeat could become a victory... Alas, it was not to be... The tiles of the track were terrible. Frodo took 10 corruption points in three spaces and falled to the lure of the One.
Sauron triumphed, but not with his military might.
We learned several lessons with this first game. First, even if things look grim for the FP, stand back and endure ! I really thougth that I had lost the game in the first 5 turns, and I really came very close to victory.
Second, Strongholds can be defended for a long, long time, if prepared correctly, and you can even destroy the besieging army sometimes.
We had a good time, and played 5 hours to completion.
More games in another post...
