I think the countersheets are a good idea too. When I first saw the game my biggest concern was the size of some of the important areas in and around Gondor. I figured it would get confusing fast with big armies getting intermingled around MT. BUT, I am happy to say this is not as big a problem as I thought. One idea I had to reduce clutter was to cut up drinking straws into little pieces, (maybe a centimeter long) and then stick them over the head of mini's. Any mini with a straw head could count as 5 figures instead of 1. Haven't tried the idea yet, but seems less messy then the current system of putting counters under mini's.

I'd be interested in counter sheets too. Good idea on the card protectors too!

Regarding the figures: I have no desire for counters. I think the game is far cooler with the figures.
All I did was paint the bases (real easy for anyone to do: white for Saruman, black for Sauron, tan for Easterlings/Southeringlings, etc.). I like keeping the rest of the figures in the original color for easy army identification.
When the armies overflow the areas, we just shove the excess in an adjacent, empty area and remember--case solved. (The only real problem is you sometimes have to move the figures around to see where the edges of the territories are, not a big deal.)
Regarding the cards: yes, I'd love a reprinted set that are written more clearly.
How much do card sleeves cost, anyway?
