The "Threats and Promises" card is played on the table and forbids "a passive nation" from advancing on the political track. Two questions: - Does this apply to all passive nations, or does the Shadow player choose a passive nation they are "threatening". - The card is discarded from the table when a nation is advanced due to an attack or due to a companion's special ability. I don't understand what companion would have the ability to advance a nation and discard this card? This card came out very early and basically ground the fellowship to a halt. He couldn't use the muster die results, and we couldn't determine how to use a character to advance a political track and thus discard a card. Thanks for any assistance

It applies to all passive nations!
To use a Companon's political ability to discard this card you must get
Gandalf, Aragorn or a hobbit to a City or Stronghold belonging to any passive nation
or
Gimli to a Dwarven City or Stronghold
or
Boromir to a Gondor City or Stronghold
or
Strider to a North City or Stronghold.
Read page 16 of the English Rule Book, check under Activating Free Peoples Nations.
Hope this helps.

Yes, but all those examples of Companions entering nations refer to activating passive nations, not advancing their political marker.
The "Threats and Promises" card is discarded "when a Free Peoples nation advances on the Political Track either due to it being attacked or due to a Companion's special ability".
I guess you are saying a Companion activating any passive nation is enough to discard "Threats and Promises" from the table? This is not what the card says.

I see the problem.
I answered you without thinking.
This suggests that only Boromir, Legolas and Gimli are the Companions able to discard the card since they all have the following special ability:
Prince of Mirkwood, Dwarf of Erebor and High Warden of the White Tower:
If Legolas is in an Elf Stronghold, use any Action Die to advance that Nation 1 step on the Political Track.
That is the rule the card refers to.
My mistake, sorry!

@veldrin: You should add this to your FAQ, since I think there are many players (including me) who misunderstood this card.

You should include the update-dates ;D in the FAQ, so that I know it when you added something because, as you know, I translate it.

OK, in the future i will add the "new" icon infront of the updated questions.
The updated questions are the three first questions under the Event Cards heading.

Is "should" no proper english? Yes, except that 'Is "should" no proper english?' itself contains two grammatical errors: - 'no' should be 'not'
- 'english' should be 'English'
On The Straight Dope they have Gaudere's Law, which states that if you post to a thread to criticize someone else's grammar or spelling, you will certainly make a worse mistake of your own. I am a native English speaker, and a good one if I say so myself, and I say: - Carry on as you are, you're doing just fine
- For heaven's sake don't ask me to make myself understood in French or Italian or Spanish, or... anything but English really. You know what we Anglos are like.
