The 'Balrog of Moria' combat card reads as follows:
"Play only if the defending army is within two Regions of Moria (...)"
Does this really mean that the Balrog can be used to attack Lorien? I find this quite strange and not very realistic.

It sounds like when you say "realistic" you mean, in keeping with the actual story.
Obviously the game can't depend wholly on the actions within the story. The designers created a situation where the balrog plays a significant role - and can often be played just as it occured in the story.
I see no issue with the balrog and the goblins marching forth from moria to assault Lorien. To indulge in a counterfactual argument - it very well may have been the case that if Gandalf had fallen without bringing down the balrog, the demon was intended to marshall the forces of Moria and make a strike at the backdoor of Lorien. Simply because something turned out one way (in a story even) doesn't mean it couldn't have been different. I don't see that as being unrealistic.
