If you have several elites and several regular army figures in a battle and you take two hits in the same round of combat, do you have to lose an elite unit or can you opt to reduce two elite into two regulars, i.e. share the damage between them?
Thanks.

In your example you can choose to: #1- "Demote" an Elite and kill a regular #2- "Demote" two Elites #3- Kill two regulars #4- Kill an Elite (first "demote" and then killing the resulted regular)

Here's a follow-on question:
If there are NO regulars available to serve as reduced elites and an all-elite force takes losses, can you take an elite to satisfy 2 losses, or does each unit get eliminated in turn to satisfy a single loss?
To illustrate, if there are 4 Elven elites defending Lothlorien and all Elven regular units are in play, what happens if the Elves suffer 4 hits? Are they allowed to destroy 2 elites, or do they have to resolve each loss sequentially and destroy all 4 units for lack of regular units to fulfill the intermediate step loss?

i would say, also in in this case you may force two elites to suffer for the other two.

All 4 of your elites would take hits and be eliminated. You have to take each hit one at a time and since you cannot demote one of your elites any more you will (sadly) lose them all.

We might introduce a rule that gives the opponent the choice as to which units are eliminated. Or, state that elites can ONLY be eliminated for two hits. An elite can absorb one hit and becomes wounded (lie the figure on its side). It can no longer count towards fighting strength. After the battle, the unit is healed and restored to full status.
