Another noob question: I believe companions can move through enemy regions with no problems. What happens if a companion ends his movement in a friendly region and that region is attacked? Does the companion have to defend? It seems like the rules say yes, but that makes it so it's actually safer to move through enemy territory than friendly territory! What am I missing?

Yes companions would have to defend if a friendly area is attacked. They are good to have, due to many combat card affects that depend on companions. They cannot be attacked if they are not with an army though, so this only applies if a friendly army is present.
