Hello everyone. Before I get to the point, let me introduce myself: my name is Alex, I live in Germany and I am a Wotr newbie. I am a big fan of Lotr since I read the books for the first time...and gosh, that's twenty years ago already. Since that I went through the story over and over again, became an addict to the movies and from time to time play Lord of the rings online. Still have my little MERP collection and started to play the Lord of the Rings Board Game. This awakened the wish for more and I stumbled across this newly published "Adventures in middle-earth-game". I was quite fascinated by it, until the the guy who ran the game-store murmered something about "...but this ain't the real deal...". The real deal he was talking about about was: War of the ring. Well, here I am now. Last weekend I decided to buy the base game and the expansion and the order is about to arrive upcoming friday (whoa, day after tomorrow! ) But what I wanted to say in the first was: great website and great forum! I am looking forward to unwrap the game very soon and to start my own battles against some friends of mine. Any clues for a successful start? Regards @lex

Welcome to the best game I have ever found For your first game I would make sure you (and preferably your friends also) have read the rules thoroughly and perhaps keep a copy of the FAQ printed out. Even then you will probably make a few mistakes on your first game, but I'm sure you will still enjoy it. Most people seem to recommend not bothering with the simplified version of the basic game. I never tried that either, but went straight for the full basic game without the expansion and had a great three player game. Just make sure you are not limited on time and don't expect to do it in the 3 hours or so a lot of people claim. My first game was far longer than that, although we did take our time and double-checked a lot of the rules. Of course once you are happy with the game, then get the on-line client available here and do some on-line as well.

Welcome to the WotR community, and thank you!
A few pointers for your first games:
As mentioned above, dive staight into the normal game (without the expansion), don't bother with the quick start rules.
Have the FAQ handy as you play.
Be prepared that you will mess up some rules the first few times you play and see them as learning games.
Don't spoil yourselves by reading alot about the different strategies, try to devise your own.
Whenever it is your turn to use an Action die don't try to find the best possible move, instead look at your available Action dice - what will they allow you to do. Playing one action at a time instead of planning far ahead helps speed up the initial games which mainly are for learning the rules and Event cards anyway.
And above all, have fun, try to see how the Event cards and outcomes of battle becomes a great story, in which you and your opponent are the architects of the fate of Middle Earth.
Happy Gaming!

Hello again. Thanks for the warm welcome! You both mentioned the FAQ and right on top of it I found this sentence: Since there have been some mistakes during the translation and editing of the Event cards you will find the most important corrections below. Does that mean, that the eventcards in the game will be replaced by the FAQ? Regards @lex

No. The mistakes are limited to a few cards and are listed below that statement. The links to the master card documents are provided just in case they can help you figure out the designers' intent on the other cards if you think their wording is unclear.

Ah ok. Thanks. Well, I thought it'd be better to read the FAQ's AFTER the rulebook. So I only got a glimpse of it. Anyway. Thanks for your answers and advices. Looking forward to hold the game in my hands tomorrow. @lex
