Frodo's three spaces out from the Cracks.
The peace loving Dwarves of Erebor were guarding the last two victory points with their pitiful [1/1/1] army. Up comes the Witch King at the head of an [6/2/5] army to crush it for the win.
The free burn an elven ring on a sword die to get a trebuchet. The shadow responds with a siege tower. The attack is on!
The free people reduce their trebuchet to make it a 1-rounder. Shadow plays "Desperate Battle" (how appropos), and only get 2 hits, not the 3 they needed for the game win.
The next turn the Free roll 4 swords and dunk the ring easily. One trebuchet at a flimsy stronghold has, for the first time ever, made a difference.

In this situation the Shadow would probably have been better served to do two attacks into the FP siege engine without mustering their own. This would have given them more opportunity to pull out the victory... of couse this is in hindsight and not in the thick of the battle.

Yes, I suspect they'd already burned an elven ring that turn, but I can't remember for sure. The story doesn't make much sense otherwise.
